There’s a lot of talk about Twitter’s move into social TV and many analysts are now saying that because a major social network is going to make a move to social TV this could be the year when it goes mainstream.
However, a recent article from AdWeek notes one of the “big hurdle[s] facing social TV is the “where does it happen” factor. The single biggest variable in determining just how real social TV will be in 2013 is the technology experience. GetGlue, Viggle and IntoNow, among others, want to be the de facto destinations for TV viewers who are using a second screen to enhance the first.”
In other words, which app will people use for their social TV experience? Twitter receives a boost from all of the GetGlue, Viggle, and IntoNow check-ins traffic and it can skew the numbers a bit because those updates aren’t originating from Twitter but apps that are syndicating to the service.
It will be interesting to see how things shape up in 2013.
