A recent article on Insider Monkey by The Motley Fool sees a future where Netflix buys GetGlue and finally gets social.

GetGlue, a specialized social network for TV and movie watchers…aims to provide members with intelligence about the most relevant trends and topics in their fields of expertise, GetGlue offers a customizable view of the entire televised zeitgeist.

For example, GetGlue keeps track of shows that are “trending” at certain times. Think of it as a looking glass into ratings but with the added benefit of including on-demand content. Sunday night, Arrested Development ranked sixth despite being available only on-demand. The Bluths even outdueled the formidable Starks and Lannisters of HBO’s Game of Thrones.

Importantly, GetGlue shouldn’t be too expensive to acquire. Last November, competitor Viggle successfully bid $85 million for the start-up, only to see the founders pull out of the deal in January. Fortunate, since Netflix would be the better partner — and with $325 million more cash than debt and a smoking-hot stock price, also able to pay a little more.

That’s a lot of cabbage and it would give GetGlue a lot of clout with its customers (advertisers) since many of them release their movies and shows on Netflix.

Do you think GetGlue should merge with Netflix?

Total activity on GetGlue includes check-ins, comments, likes, and favorites but it doesn’t always reflect which topic awarded the most stickers.

Last week, Doctor Who topped the TV charts with the most activity but, surpisingly, YouTube’s Comedy Week Coming Soon sticker was earned by more users (55%) according to statistics provided by Achivy.

Last week, Doctor Who amassed nearly 200,000 combined check-ins and other activity thanks to the countdown stickers that were available on GetGlue. This was enough to put it past Game of Thrones which generally has no problem surpassing the 100K mark every week. With the season finale of Doctor Who in the books, Whovians can look forward to the return of The Doctor in November and ,presumably, more stickers.

The Office topped the broadcast list with 88,210 check-ins and other activities followed by Supernatural. Broadcast TV shows dominated the top 10 last week capturing 8 of the 10 overall spots.

This week we’ll see a rash of check-ins for Arrested Development but how will GetGlue categorize them? Will they consider it a scripted cable show? If so, there’s a chance it will top the chart next week and keep Game of Thrones in the #2 spot.

However, a recent article from AdWeek notes one of the “big hurdle[s] facing social TV is the “where does it happen” factor. The single biggest variable in determining just how real social TV will be in 2013 is the technology experience. GetGlue, Viggle and IntoNow, among others, want to be the de facto destinations for TV viewers who are using a second screen to enhance the first.”

In other words, which app will people use for their social TV experience? Twitter receives a boost from all of the GetGlue, Viggle, and IntoNow check-ins traffic and it can skew the numbers a bit because those updates aren’t originating from Twitter but apps that are syndicating to the service.

It will be interesting to see how things shape up in 2013.

ABC and The CW each have 3 shows in the Top 10 this week. Game of Thrones continues to enjoy the top spot due to the “re-air” stickers that are being offered. It will be interesting to see where Doctor Who lands on the chart next week because of the stickers leading up to the season finale.

Do you think Doctor Who will finally edge past Game of Thrones next week and claim the #1 spot on the activity chart?

This is the 2nd week that he’s posted a great infographic with the information he’s gathered. The Iron Man 3 box office sticker is the most-earned followed closely by the Game of Thrones episode “The Climb”.

Another interesting thing to note is that Doctor Who fell completely off the list. This may be due to the fact that the sticker was released last and didn’t appear on the Achivy sticker calendar soon enough (I missed it even though I knew the show was airing). It will be interesting to see how his stats compare to GetGlue’s TV infographic when it’s published.

Besides TiVo there are a number of platforms and services that would benefit from integration with GetGlue. Apple TV, Hulu, Crackle, and Netflix immediately come to mind. All of these services could benefit from the social buzz generated around GetGlue check-ins.

GetGlue partnered with DirecTV in September 2011 to allow check-ins while watching shows. This was a major boost for social TV and a similar deal with TiVo could make some huge waves in the industry.

Third-party tools like import2glue.com and last2glue.com make it possible to automatically import activity from Netflix, iTunes, Grooveshark, Pandora, and Last.FM and were quasi-endorsed by GetGlue because they were building the topics in their database. Last2Glue and Import2Glue officially went offline in March 2013 because Dustin Runnels could no longer afford to maintain the services. the sites are up but they are no longer being maintained. You can go even farther back to 2009 when iGlueHulu.com allowed you to add your activity from Hulu to GetGlue. Again, the status of this GetGlue check-in service is unknown.

Remember the GetGlue toolbar? This was a nice little add-on for your browser that you could use to add topics to the GetGlue database.

Why am I mentioning all of these old tools? GetGlue is always looking for new partners. New partners will make it easy to check-in to the things we like most. Wouldn’t it be nice if when you watched a show on Netflix you could tap or click an icon to check in on GetGlue?

Personally, I’d like to see more integration with more services. Cobbled together third-party services that need to be tweaked every time GetGlue changes their API can only do so much. Here’s hoping Alex and his crew make a deal with TiVo that will convince other content providers to integrate with GetGlue.

Although top performing shows, namely ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars and AMC’s The Walking Dead, are frequently found on cable, 56% of all 2nd Screen Activity is generated from programs on broadcast. This is true, despite the fact that there were fewer broadcast telecasts in the first quarter.

Social TV app provider Viggle said it is commissioning Nielsen to conduct two studies aimed at tracking how second-screen apps on smartphones and tablets impact the viewing of TV programming and advertising.

Viggle announced in November that it would acquire rival social TV firm GetGlue for nearly $80 million in stock and cash. But it called off the deal in January, and paid GetGlue a $500,000 breakup fee. Viggle, which offers members rewards for using its application to share info about TV shows and movies they are watching, may be able to use the Nielsen studies to draw more advertisers to its platform.
